Project Summary
The Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics popularly known as LHP Hub is a comprehensive system designed to meet the needs of wholesalers and retailers and consumers alike. It is planned as a modern, smart central market system equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for major food processing, storage, and distribution. This project, a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Lagos State through the expertise of Origin Tech Group through its construction company Rhema Projects is expected to address the growing demand for safe and wholesome food in Lagos. This project is set to play a critical role in ensuring food security, reducing post-harvest losses, and fostering economic growth in Lagos and beyond.
Although the hub is still undergoing construction, its impact on the Lagos food systems is already eliciting great hope as a game-changer, one that will significantly address one of Africa’s most pressing agricultural concerns which the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) posits as a looming danger in view of the perennial challenge being faced by several communities across the continent in meeting its nutritional needs when compared to the ever-increasing and rapidly expanding population, projected by the FAO to swell to 398 million by 2050, one for which the internationally recognised food organisation also advocated increase in agricultural output as the antidote to alleviating the growing demand for food.
The Lagos Food Security System and Logistics Hub is more than just a market; it is a comprehensive system designed to meet the needs of wholesalers, retailers, and consumers alike.

Background
Sometimes around 2020, occasioned by the food challenges witnessed in Lagos state during the COVID-19 which made food transportation from the hinterland became challenging, the Lagos State Government embarked on an ambitious journey to revolutionise the state's food security system. This was in sync with the 5-Year Agricultural Roadmap of the visionary leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to pave the way for developing agricultural value chains where the state has competitive and comparative advantages to attain self-sufficiency in food production from 18 to 40 per cent.
Model
Modelled after similar integrated food security systems around the world including the Rungis International market in France, Market Stolychnyl, Ukraine, New Smithfield Wholesale Food Market in Manchester, and the Birmingham Wholesale Market – all large wholesale fresh produce markets across the globe, the Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics popularly known as LHP Hub was conceived with a clear mission: to develop a modern, smart central market system equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for major food processing, storage, and distribution.
Partnership Structure
This project, a partnership between the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems and Origin Tech Group through its construction company Rhema Projects, was conceptualised and invariably designed to address the growing demand for safe and wholesome food in Lagos, ensuring that both dry goods and fresh produce are stored, repackaged, and redistributed efficiently.
While construction at the project site is ongoing, the hub has already begun to play a pivotal role in the state’s food supply chain. Its infrastructure, though still undergoing development, has facilitated the early operations of wholesale produce markets aimed at serving as key distribution points for mid-level market retailers with huge potentials for one of the cardinal objectives of its functionality as a critical infrastructure towards the stabilisation of food prices within the state and ensuring a steady supply of fresh and processed food to the bustling metropolis.

Project Structure
The Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics Hub once fully operational, the hub will include the following key features:
The Administrative Convergence Area which is planned to become the heart of the hub will house offices for various personnel and functions, ensuring seamless coordination and administration of the entire facility.
The Dealing Areas will be a dedicated space for bulk dealers, designed to accommodate key distributors of vegetables, fresh fruits, meat, and seafood. Spacious display areas and ancillary spaces for administration, the dealing area streamlines the process of getting fresh produce to market.
While the Dry storage area will be a warehouse system, the largest of its kind in Nigeria, upon completion it will have capacity to store 4,620 units of 30-ton trucks of goods, ensuring that dry food items are preserved in optimal conditions.
Cold storage facility
A cold storage facility spanning 22,500 sqm, this facility is envisaged as a critical node of the infrastructure as it is crucial for the sorting, grading, and storing of perishable foodstuffs. It will accommodate 2,310 trucks, ensuring that fresh produce remains in prime condition until it reaches consumers.
Integrated Economic Value-Chain
This is also coming at a time in history where knowledge-based home-grown solutions are currently driving the national and rural prosperity of leading developed and developing nations like Brazil which generates a cumulative revenue for its national economy to the tune of $130 billion which is perhaps three times what Nigeria gets from crude. He believes that the hub will significantly contribute to stabilising the food supply in Lagos as well as create a reliable platform for the storage and distribution of both local and imported food products, thereby reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring food availability throughout the year.
